Guide to Dabbing (Sauce,Shatter,Live Res)

Updated: Jan 14, 2022

In case you're new to the dabbing phenomenon, you've probably seen all the foreign tools and waxy substances that go into it and are curious about how it all works.

It can be a little intimidating at first, but we promise it’s a lot easier to understand than you think. We’ll break it down to the basics so you can hit your first dab like a seasoned pro.

What is “dabbing”?

Dabbing is a method of inhaling marijuana through flash vaporization. It involves heating and inhaling cannabis concentrates via a special rig called the dab rig. The name comes from the small dabs of concentrate that you use with the dab rig to deliver the high in the form of vapour; which you’d then inhale. You inhale the vapour in the same way you’d inhale smoke from a bong or bowl.

These concentrates are usually more potent than dry flower and deliver marijuana’s psychoactive effects almost instantaneously. This is particularly beneficial for those who need rapid relief from nausea, pain, stress, appetite loss, and so forth.

What equipment do you need to dab?

  • Cannabis concentrate of choice: shatter or distillate.

  • Water pipe

  • Dabbing nail — typically made of quartz, ceramic, or titanium.

  • Dome — glass piece that goes over the nail and works like a convection oven trapping heat; not always necessary.

  • Blowtorch or good lighter

  • Dabber or wand — typically made of glass, metal, or ceramic; this is the tool used to pick up the concentrate and place it on the dab nail.

When dabbing, what is the difference between shatter and distillate?

When it comes to your first dab experience, choosing the right concentrate is essential. Distillate is THC in its absolute, purest form. It is considered the “top shelf” of concentrates and is typically recommended for more experienced users. Shatter usually yields over 80% THC content. It has a consistency similar to thick honey when heated and delicate glass when cold.

How does cannabis dabbing work?

Here’s what the dabbing process looks like and what each dabbing piece is used for:

Step 1: Place dab nail in the water pipe. Use a lighter or torch to heat it until it’s almost red-hot.

Step 2: Let it cool for a few seconds.

Step 3: Pick up a small dab of concentrate with your dab wand.

Step 4: Carefully place concentrate onto the dab nail with wand.

Step 5: As it begins to bubble, place dome over the dab nail until the concentrate has fully vaporized.

Step 6: Lift the dome and inhale.

It might be tricky at first, but the more you try it, the better you’ll get at it. Be patient and always remember to start low and go slow.

Is dabbing safe?

As with any substance, despite its purpose or possible benefits, it can pose potential risks. Some users view taking dabs as a healthier alternative to smoking marijuana. This is because concentrates are so highly concentrated that it requires fewer “hits” to get high. However, as it involves consuming a more potent substance, it can result in quickly developing a higher tolerance.

Another danger associated with dabbing is the risk of burning during the extraction process. However, this risk can be easily avoided by purchasing it ready-made from a trusted, reputable source.
